Not For Radio? We Politely Disagree

Not For Radio is a project by María Zardoya, the vocalist of The Marías, but it exists as its own artistic identity rather than simply an extension of her previous band. With that distinction in mind, the most interesting place to begin is not with comparison, but with the space the project creates around her songwriting.

Zardoya has spent much of her career exploring intimacy from unusual angles. As the frontwoman of The Marías, she became known for a style of songwriting that moved between English and Spanish, often examining connection, distance and emotional uncertainty. Not For Radio offers another setting for that voice, one where the focus is placed more directly on her own songwriting perspective.

The project’s debut album, Melt, was released in 2025, followed by the Bloom single release in 2026. The three-track release includes ‘Ache’, alongside ‘Kitten’ and ‘Living Room’. ‘Ache’ features songwriting contributions from Zardoya, Gianluca Buccellati and Sam Evian, with Zardoya also credited as a producer.

The title ‘Ache’ carries a simplicity that feels almost physical. It suggests something difficult to ignore, something felt before it is understood. In discussing the song, Zardoya described writing it after a medical procedure, during a period of physical discomfort, with the desire to reach for someone as a source of comfort.

That explanation provides a direct point of entry, but it does not close the song off. The strength of the idea lies in its familiarity. Physical pain and emotional need have long existed alongside one another in songwriting, yet the connection remains endlessly personal. The body remembers things the mind might attempt to rationalise.

‘Ache’ sits within the broader identity of Not For Radio, a project that allows Zardoya to examine vulnerability through a more individual lens. Rather than separating herself completely from the qualities that have defined her previous work, the project appears to continue an ongoing interest in closeness, longing and the complicated language of affection.

What makes the song compelling is the tension between fragility and expression. The title itself suggests a state of being rather than a specific event. An ache is not necessarily a wound. It can be a reminder, a presence, something that remains after the original moment has passed.

That sense of lingering emotion has often been central to Zardoya’s songwriting. Her work frequently exists in the space between attachment and uncertainty, where feelings are not neatly resolved but allowed to remain complicated. The result is music that values atmosphere and emotional detail without requiring a single definitive interpretation.

As part of Bloom, ‘Ache’ represents another step in the development of Not For Radio as a distinct project. It places Zardoya’s songwriting at the centre while continuing the reflective qualities that have shaped her career so far.

There is something quietly human in the song’s central idea. The desire to be comforted, to be understood, to reach towards another person when the body or mind feels overwhelmed, is hardly unusual. What matters is the care with which that feeling is expressed.

‘Ache’ does not attempt to transform vulnerability into a grand statement. It simply allows it to exist.

Sometimes that is enough. Sometimes the most honest songs are the ones that admit what remains unresolved.
