Francesca Was A Bank Robber

Anna Francesca has spent much of her creative life moving between disciplines. Before Beaks became the name attached to her music, she worked in photography, graphic design and international modelling, appearing on runways for houses including Celine, Vivienne Westwood, Miu Miu and Chanel. Modelling, however, was never quite the whole story. Her writing and poetry kept pulling her towards something less polished and considerably more personal.

Beaks is where those interests meet.

Based in Vienna, Francesca has developed the project as a multidisciplinary extension of her writing, drawing on indie, pop, punk and electronic music while remaining interested in the uneasy territory between dreams and waking life. Her earlier singles, including ‘I Dropped the Bottle’, ‘Crosswalk’, ‘White Lies’ and ‘Venom’, established a growing body of work concerned with modern life, intimacy and contradiction.

Then along comes ‘TY (robbed the bank)’, which is, reassuringly, not actually a confession.

Released in July 2026, the single takes its title from an imaginary crime spree involving friends, a getaway car and a rather inconvenient quantity of stolen cash. The story is deliberately absurd, but the feeling underneath it is sincere. Francesca describes the song as a homage to friendship and to loving out loud, a response to what she sees as a darkness running through much contemporary youth culture and its aesthetic.

There is something rather lovely about choosing a bank robbery as a vehicle for saying thank you to your friends.

The song's central idea is wonderfully uncomplicated: these people are together, they have each other's backs, and for a few minutes the rest of the world can be left behind. The bank robbery is less Bonnie and Clyde than a particularly energetic group outing, although presumably with considerably more paperwork afterwards.

That warmth matters because it reveals another side of Beaks.

Francesca's writing has often been described in terms of existentialism, modern anxiety and the strange space between reality and fantasy. Those things remain part of the project, but ‘TY (robbed the bank)’ deliberately turns towards affection. The accompanying imagery of friends running through a sunny field, scratching their shins and bruising their knees, makes friendship sound less like an abstract virtue and more like something physical, messy and gloriously alive.

It is also consistent with Francesca's broader creative life. Her background in visual art and fashion has given her experience of highly constructed worlds, yet Beaks seems increasingly interested in what happens when those surfaces crack. The project can accommodate glamour and awkwardness, fantasy and ordinary human tenderness without requiring them to cancel each other out.

There is a useful contradiction there.

Someone who has spent time inside the highly choreographed world of international fashion has chosen to make a piece of music celebrating friendship through the least glamorous possible scenario: running around outside with your friends, getting dirty, carrying imaginary stolen money and being happy about it.

Perhaps that is the point.

Beaks does not seem particularly interested in choosing between beauty and mess. Francesca's work instead occupies the uncomfortable middle ground where the two can coexist. ‘TY (robbed the bank)’ simply happens to lean towards the light.

And that makes the song rather more than its splendidly ridiculous title suggests.

The bank can remain robbed. The money can be imaginary. The important thing, apparently, is that everyone makes it to the getaway car.
